YSU scored 28 straight points to open the game and the Penguins picked up their third ranked win of the season. Wide receiver Lynn Wyche-El, safety Roderick Owens Jr., and kick returner Donald Barksdale all played invaluable roles in YSU’s 35-22 victory against Northern Iowa.
Barksdale led the Penguins to an electric start, returning a kickoff for a 93-yard touchdown to give YSU an early 7-0 advantage. A sophomore running back who eclipsed 5,000 career rushing yards while at Steel Valley High School, Barksdale has made a significant impact on special teams this season.
Grand Valley State transfer Lynn Wyche-El continues to string together standout performances, recording eight receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown. Wyche-El had two big moments, hauling in a 42-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter and sealing the game with a 15-yard reception on 4th-and-9.
Freshman Roderick Owens Jr. anchored the defense with 11 tackles and one pass breakup. Owens played with tremendous physicality at the point of attack and also made some big plays in coverage. His emergence at safety has been massive for the defense.
Congrats Lynn, Donald, and Roderick on winning these awards!
