YSU picked up a huge conference win on the road to start 3-1 in the MVFC for the first time since 2016. Running back Jaden Gilbert and safety Cam Smith put together standout performances, fueling the Penguins to a 57-24 victory.

Gilbert got the momentum going early for YSU, scoring rushing touchdowns on 14- and 65-yard scampers to give the Penguins a 15-7 advantage. The explosive tailback finished the afternoon with 15 carries for a career-high 163 yards and three scores, unlocking a new element for the YSU offense.

With Gilbert’s effectiveness on the ground, Beau Brungard was able to dissect the Indiana State defense through the air, going 25-of-34 (73.5%) for a career-high 386 yards and three touchdowns.

Smith guided the defense through a sluggish start, leading the team with nine tackles. The Iowa State transfer has a nose for the football, knifing into the box to make physical tackles in run defense.

After allowing 17 first-half points, the Penguin defense forced six consecutive punts to close the game. On the season, Smith now has 45 tackles and one interception.

Congrats to Jaden and Cam on earning these awards!
